The B+W 486 UV-/ IR-Cut filter has a sharp-cut off absorption to combat unwanted UV and infrared components. It prevents color casts and blurring for digital cameras where the IR barrier in front of the image sensor still displays some residual transmittance. The 486 filter does not achieve this by absorption via colored glass, but by interference, a number of wafer-thin partially reflecting layers with a precisely calculated thickness.
